Golden Stick Stays With Cards

 Senior Defense, Freshman Scorer

Key Win

The Thomas Cardinals believe the Golden Stick belongs to them...and they back up that belief on the field.  The Cards fought off a tough Kilbourne Wolves team for a 9-7 win to keep the stick.

Freshman Amy Stillwell lead the Cards with five goals.  Katie Kaps has two goals and two assists.  Kelley Windle lead the Wolves with 3 goals.  The last coming with 6:32 to go that brought the Wolves to within one at 8-7.  Stillwell's fifth goal off a great pass from Kaps just 24 seconds was all the Cards needed.

A great defensive play by Ashley Bleimes with 3:24 to go, took away the Wolves threat, and the Cards passing controlled the ball for all but five seconds of the final three minutes.  Bleimes and fellow seniors Emily Rund and Kaps gave the Wolves very few good looks at the goal all night.

Cards Tie #1 UA 14-14

Stillwell, Kaps, and Defense Spark Comeback!

The Thomas Worthington Cardinals were down 8-4 at the half to the defending state champs and current #1 team, the Upper Arlington Golden Bears.  But there was still 25 minutes to play.  The Cards roared out for four quick goals in the second half to tie things at 8-8, lead by freshman Amy Stillwell, who had five scores on the night.  The teams traded goals until Melissa Jackson found the net at the 10:10 mark, and UA trailed for the first time all year.  Maggie Bremer scored for the Bears at 8:40 and when Sloan DeVilbiss went coast to coast with 6:56 remaining the Bears were back in front 12-11.  It took Katie Kaps just 20 seconds to tie things back up after the Cards controlled the draw.  The Bears came back one minute later on a great pass from Kylie McClure to Kirby Slager, 13-12 UA.   With under four minutes the Cards Jessica Perry bounced an 8 meter shot past UA goalie Jody Anderson and the game went under two minutes tied at 13.  Jackson capped her four goal performance with a rebound score at 1:48, to put the Cards back in front 14-13.  Thomas controlled the draw, but the UA  swarming defense forced a turnover.  Kristen McCandlish's 8 meter shot with less than thirty seconds trickled past Card goalie Marcella Bissett, despite a great effort that got a piece of the ball, and after fifty minutes of great  lacrosse it was a 14-14 tie.

Key to the game for the Cards was some great defense in the second half, lead by Bissett repeatedly turning away the high powered UA offense, and Ashley Bleimes' defense on All American Colby Szlag.

TW:  Stillwell 5G, Jackson 4G 1A, Kaps 1G, 4A, Pisching, Perry, Rankin, Natrajan   Bissett 9 saves

UA:   DeVilbiss 4G, Szlag 2G 2A, McCandlish 4G, Slager, Bremer, Murray, McClure 1G, 3A,  Anderson 14 Saves.
