Bleimes Family History

Chapter 3. Eva

Eva Mable Germann's story begins 27 September 1893. Born of Jacob Germann and Bertha Smith Robinson in Columbus, she grew up in what is now called 'German Village' - part of the south end of town. Her father had a thriving combination saloon and grocery at Grant and Donaldson, then a dry-goods store located at 1973 Parsons Avenue. The family lived in the apartment above the store. This building still stands.

Eva attended Columbus public schools including the old Central High - then normal school and got her teaching certificate at age 19 in 1912. She taught in the Columbus schools until venturing to Washington D. C. during WW I to work for the federal government. In this short interlude she was accompanied by a close friend, Lyndall Crosson (later Lyndall Halgren Stafford). At some time in this era she learned to play the piano fairly well and acquired an upright of her own.

Back to teaching, Eva met and married George R. Bleimes in 1922. They had 3-4 addresses in east Columbus before moving to Rathbone Rd. and High St. in 1925. My father used to quip that, “it was cheaper to move than pay rent”.
Subsequent events in her life are noted in Chapter I.
